Wednesday morning, a 5.0 magnitude quake was registered close to Severo-Kuril’sk, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor, which struck the area at 23:20 UTC (10:20 local time), was centered roughly 177 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.

Over the last week, the region has experienced six tremors of magnitude 5.5 or above. The largest one was a 5.9 earthquake that shook the same region prior to this quake.
