A 5.0 magnitude quake shook close to Severo-Kuril’sk around midnight Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 14:21 UTC (00:21 local time). The epicenter was roughly 56 km southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk, at a depth of 78 km.

Closeby area shaken by two tremors over the week

In the past week, there have been two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 centered in the same region. The largest, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, struck on Aug. 3, while the other, measuring 4.5, was detected on Aug. 5.
