A 5.0 magnitude quake shook close to Severo-Kuril’sk around midnight Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The tremor jolted the region at 14:21 UTC (00:21 local time). It occurred at a depth of 84 km with the epicenter approximately 49 km southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Closeby area shaken by two tremors over the week
In the past week, there have been two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 centered in the same region. The largest, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, struck on Aug. 3, while the other, measuring 4.6, was detected on Aug. 5.
