Earthquake measuring 5.0 rattles area close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 1

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Severo-Kuril’sk Friday night.

The tremor, which hit the region at 11:02 UTC (21:02 local time), was centered about 125 km south-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Quakes last week

Last week, the area has experienced nine earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 or higher, nine of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The biggest, a 6.4 magnitude tremor, was recorded in the same region two days ago.
