Update: Seismic activity on July 28 – 5.2 magnitude earthquake near Hiroo, Japan reported

URAKAWA DISTRICT, Hokkaido — around midday Monday, a 5.2 magnitude quake was detected near Hiroo, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor shook the area at 03:10 UTC (12:10 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated roughly 20 km west of Hiroo and occurred at a depth of 58 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.0 event, but later upgraded it to 5.2.

Those who noticed the quake are encouraged to report it via the USGS Felt Report form. The agency has so far received 7 reports via its online form from people who say they felt the tremor. Weak shaking has been recorded and several people reported experiencing the earthquake in and around the Sapporo area according to the USGS DYFI report.

In the past week, a single magnitude 4.3 earthquake was centered in the region. The event was documented close to Urakawa, seven days earlier.
