Update: Earthquake strikes region near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Sept. 18 – 5.3 magnitude recorded

A 5.3 magnitude quake was registered near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor jolted the area at 19:10 UTC (06:10 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated approximately 154 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.

Tremors past week

Five quakes of magnitude 5.5 or higher have been reported in the region over the last week. The largest one was a 7.8 earthquake that hit the same area prior to this quake.
