Earthquake hits area close to Puerto Madero, Mexico: 5.2 magnitude recorded on July 18

TAPACHULA, Chis. — A 5.2 magnitude quake occurred close to Puerto Madero on Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A tremor jolted the region at 09:59 UTC (03:59 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was roughly 69 km southwest of Puerto Madero and occurred at a depth of 45 km.

Tremors last week

During the past week, there have been 35 quakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 7.3 magnitude earthquake detected in the same region on Jul. 17.
