Update: Seismic activity on Sept. 2 – 5.2 magnitude earthquake near Nikolski, AK registered

ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — A 5.2 magnitude quake jolted close to Nikolski on Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor struck at 5:14 a.m. (6:14 p.m. local time), with its epicenter about 59 miles south-southwest of Nikolski and a depth of 22 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later upgraded it to 5.2.

Last week, there have been 25 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby. The biggest, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, was detected in the same region on Sep. 31.
