DAVAO OCCIDENTAL, Davao Region — A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Balangonan on Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor hit at 09:47 UTC (17:47 local time), with its epicenter about 4 km north-northeast of Balangonan and a depth of 64 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Last week’s tremors

In the past week, there have been two quakes greater than magnitude 2.5 in the region. The largest, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, was recorded near Pangyan on Jul. 18, while a smaller 5.1 magnitude quake was felt near Sugal on Jul. 22.
