Update: 5.3 magnitude earthquake hits southeast of Easter Island on June 1

EASTER ISLAND, Valparaíso — A 5.3 magnitude quake jolted southeast of Easter Island on Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 03:40 UTC (20:40 local time), a tremor struck the region at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter southeast of Easter Island of southeast of Easter Island. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.
