A 6.7 magnitude quake shook near Ōfunato on Friday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor, which slammed the area at 11:22 UTC (20:22 local time), was centered about 44 km east-southeast of Ōfunato. It occurred at a depth of 42 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 6.6 event, but later upgraded it to 6.7.
