ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — A 5.3 magnitude quake hit close to Attu Station on Monday around midday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor jolted at 11:46 p.m. (11:46 a.m. local time), with its epicenter about 141 miles east-southeast of Attu Station and a depth of 6 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.5 event, but later downgraded it to 5.3.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, there have been six tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or higher centered nearby. The largest one was a 4.2 earthquake that was detected in the same region prior to this quake.
