Update: Feb. 19 – 5.1 magnitude earthquake recorded close to Arecibo, Puerto Rico

ARROZAL, Arecibo — Thursday morning, a 5.1 magnitude quake was reported near Arecibo, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was reported that a tremor hit the region at 14:18 UTC (10:18 local time). The epicenter was located about 155 km north of Arecibo, at a depth of 34 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.0 event, but later upgraded it to 5.1.

Those who noticed the earthquake are encouraged to report it via the USGS Felt Report form. 28 people have submitted responses through the agency’s online form, reporting they experienced the quake. The USGS DYFI report indicates that weak to light shaking was registered, with people in Luquillo, Gurabo, Anasco and San Juan among those who experienced the tremor.

Over the last week, a single magnitude 3.5 quake was centered in the area. The event was documented near Brenas, four days ago.
