Update: Earthquake jolts region near Macquarie Island on Jan. 26 – 5.1 magnitude registered

Monday afternoon, a 5.1 magnitude quake was reported near Macquarie Island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor shook the area at 07:08 UTC (17:08 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located west of Macquarie Island and occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.0 event, but later upgraded it to 5.1.

Last week’s tremor

Over the last week, another quake with a magnitude 5.7 was detected in the region. It was also recorded close to Macquarie Island, prior to this quake.
