Earthquake measuring 5.1 strikes area near Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Jan. 14

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.1 magnitude quake occurred close to Severo-Kuril’sk at midday on Wednesday.

The tremor, which hit the region at 03:08 UTC (13:08 local time), was centered roughly 68 km east of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 64 km.

Over the last week, there was another tremor of magnitude 2.5 centered in the area, which was also detected near Severo-Kuril’sk, four days earlier.
