Update: Earthquake measuring 5.3 jolts area near Kokopo, Papua New Guinea on Dec. 21

POMIO DISTRICT, East New Britain Province — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake occurred close to Kokopo Sunday morning.

The tremor hit the region at 23:07 UTC (09:07 local time). It occurred at a depth of 49 km with the epicenter located roughly 141 km south-southwest of Kokopo.

Closeby area shaken by two tremors over the week

Over the past week, the region has experienced two tremors above magnitude 2.5, both centered in the same area. The larger, a 5.2 magnitude event, was registered prior to this quake, while the other, at magnitude 4.9, struck on December 22.
