According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake occurred close to South Sandwich Islands region Monday night.
The tremor hit at 00:43 UTC (22:43 local time), with its epicenter situated of South Sandwich Islands region and a depth of 72 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.2 but later upgraded to 5.3.

Two tremors closeby last week
During the past week, there have been two quakes, exceeding magnitude 2.5, centered nearby. Both were detected in the same area where the larger one was a 5.5 earthquake that hit seven days earlier. The other, of magnitude 5.0, jolted on December 13.
