A 5.1 magnitude quake was detected close to Kepulauan Babar Friday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A tremor hit the area at 08:32 UTC (17:32 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located of Kepulauan Babar and occurred at a depth of 140 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.

Tremors past week

Last week, two earthquakes, greater than magnitude 2.5, were centered nearby. The stronger, a magnitude 4.6 quake, was recorded in the same region two days earlier. The other, measuring 4.4, struck near Banda Sea on November 22.
