A 5.3 magnitude quake was recorded close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck the area at 03:58 UTC (14:58 local time). It occurred at a depth of 35 km with the epicenter situated approximately 142 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.

Over the last week, 18 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher have been reported in the region, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest, measuring 6.1, rocked the same region one day ago.
