Update: Earthquake shakes region near Nabire, Indonesia on Sept. 18 – 5.0 magnitude reported

NABIRE REGENCY, Papua — Thursday morning, a 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded close to Nabire, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor struck the area at 22:53 UTC (07:53 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated roughly 29 km south of Nabire and occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Past week’s tremor

Over the last week, there has been another quake of magnitude 6.1 centered in the region. Prior to this quake, it too was detected close to Nabire.
