The tremor, which struck the area at 20:17 UTC (07:17 local time), was centered about 144 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It occurred at a depth of 36 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.4 event, but later upgraded it to 5.5.
