Update: Seismic activity on Sept. 20 – 5.1 magnitude earthquake near South Sandwich Islands region recorded

A 5.1 magnitude quake was registered near South Sandwich Islands region Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A tremor hit the area at 07:28 UTC (05:28 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located of South Sandwich Islands region and occurred at a depth of 30 km.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, three earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or above have been detected in the region. The most significant was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled in the same region one day ago.
