Update: Earthquake jolts region near Vilyuchinsk, Russia on Sept. 11 – 5.0 magnitude detected

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake hit near Vilyuchinsk Thursday afternoon.

The tremor shook at 04:53 UTC (15:53 local time), with its epicenter situated approximately 177 km south-southeast of Vilyuchinsk and a depth of 10 km.

Quakes last week

In the past week, seven tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or greater have been recorded in the area. The strongest, a 5.2 magnitude quake, struck the same region one day ago.
