Update: Earthquake measuring 6.6 strikes area near Río Grande, Panama on Oct. 9

SONÁ DISTRICT, Veraguas Province — A 6.6 magnitude quake occurred close to Río Grande on Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor rocked the region at 20:25 UTC (15:25 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter approximately 14 km west of Río Grande. Seismologists first reported it as a 6.9 event, but later downgraded it to 6.6.
