Update: Earthquake hits region close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Aug. 23 – 5.3 magnitude detected

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake occurred near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Saturday morning.

At 21:29 UTC (08:29 local time), the area was struck by a tremor. The earthquake shook at a depth of 35 km, with its epicenter roughly 147 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.4 event, but later downgraded it to 5.3.
