Update: Aug. 16 – 5.3 magnitude earthquake detected close to Hengchun, Taiwan

HENGCHUN TOWNSHIP, Pingtung County — Saturday morning, a 5.3 magnitude quake was reported close to Hengchun, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck at 22:51 UTC (06:51 local time), with its epicenter located about 136 km southwest of Hengchun and a depth of 10 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.2 but later upgraded to 5.3.
