Update: Earthquake measuring 5.2 hits area near Vilyuchinsk, Russia on July 30

Wednesday morning, a 5.2 magnitude quake was registered close to Vilyuchinsk, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was reported that a tremor struck the region at 17:20 UTC (04:20 local time). The epicenter was located about 186 km south-southeast of Vilyuchinsk, at a depth of 39 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.3 event, but later downgraded it to 5.2.

Tremors last week

Eight quakes with a magnitude 5.5 or higher have been reported in the region in the past week. The strongest, a 6.2 magnitude quake, was detected in the same area prior to this quake.
