Update: Earthquake of 5.3 magnitude reported close to Vilyuchinsk, Russia on July 30

Wednesday afternoon, a 5.3 magnitude quake was detected near Vilyuchinsk, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which hit the area at 07:58 UTC (18:58 local time), was centered approximately 190 km south-southeast of Vilyuchinsk. It occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.

Last week, there have been nine tremors of magnitude 5.5 or higher centered nearby. The biggest, a 6.9 magnitude quake, rocked near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky prior to this quake.
