According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake struck near Severo-Kuril’sk Sunday night.
The tremor rattled at 12:38 UTC (23:38 local time), with its epicenter situated approximately 211 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk and a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.

Tremors last week
During the past week, there have been 48 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The strongest, a 6.1 magnitude quake, shook the same region two days earlier.
