According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake occurred close to Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday afternoon.
The tremor jolted the area at 05:09 UTC (15:09 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter located roughly 111 km southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Tremors past week
Five tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater were recorded in the region last week, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake registered in the same area prior to this quake.
