Update: Earthquake measuring 8.0 slams area near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on July 29

A 8.0 magnitude quake was recorded close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A tremor rocked the region at 23:24 UTC (10:24 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located roughly 133 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and occurred at a depth of 19 km.

Over the last week, the area has experienced 26 quakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The biggest, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake, hit the same region five days earlier.
