Thursday afternoon, a 5.2 magnitude quake was detected near Vilyuchinsk, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which jolted the area at 06:59 UTC (18:59 local time), was centered about 55 km southeast of Vilyuchinsk. It occurred at a depth of 72 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.3 event, but later downgraded it to 5.2.

In the past week, nine tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above have been recorded in the region, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The biggest, a 6.2 magnitude quake, slammed the same region one day ago.
