Update: 5.2 magnitude earthquake jolts near Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 31

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.2 magnitude quake occurred close to Severo-Kuril’sk Thursday afternoon.

The tremor shook the area at 07:21 UTC (18:21 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter located about 201 km southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, there have been 12 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest, measuring 6.2, struck the same region prior to this quake.
