Update: Seismic activity on July 31 – 5.1 magnitude earthquake close to the Fiji Islands detected

NAITASIRI, Central Division — Thursday afternoon, a 5.1 magnitude quake was recorded near the Fiji Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 06:49 UTC (18:49 local time), the region was shaken by a tremor. The earthquake jolted at a depth of 565 km, with its epicenter south of the Fiji Islands. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.0 event, but later upgraded it to 5.1.

Two tremors close to the Fiji Islands last week

In the past week, the area has experienced two quakes greater than magnitude 5.5, both centered in the same area. The larger, a 6.6 magnitude event, was registered two days earlier, while the other, at magnitude 5.8, hit on July 30.
