According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.2 magnitude quake shook near Severo-Kuril’sk on Monday around midday.

The tremor, which jolted the area at 03:55 UTC (13:55 local time), was centered approximately 92 km south-southwest of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 77 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.3 event, but later downgraded it to 5.2.

Nearby region shaken by two tremors over the week

Two earthquakes exceeding magnitude 2.5 have been reported nearby over the last week. Each was centered in the same area with the more significant — a 4.5 magnitude event — occurring six days ago. The second, a 4.4 magnitude tremor, rattled on October 28.
