Update: Seismic activity on Jan. 4 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake close to South Sandwich Islands region registered

A 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded near South Sandwich Islands region Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor shook the area at 10:35 UTC (08:35 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located of South Sandwich Islands region and occurred at a depth of 35 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.

Over the last week, another magnitude 5.0 quake was centered nearby. The event was documented close to South Sandwich Islands region too, two days earlier.
