5.1 magnitude earthquake jolts close to Lorengau, Papua New Guinea on May 22

A 5.1 magnitude quake occurred near Lorengau on Friday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which shook the area at 10:08 UTC (20:08 local time), was centered about 138 km south-southeast of Lorengau. It occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Two quakes closeby last week

In the past week, two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 have been centered in the region. Both were reported in the same area with the stronger — a 5.0 magnitude earthquake — rattling on May 17. The other, measuring 4.3, struck on May 17.
