According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Shikotan Sunday afternoon.

At 04:03 UTC (14:03 local time), the region was hit by a tremor. The earthquake rattled at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter about 106 km east-southeast of Shikotan. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.
