Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 strikes area near La Tirana, Chile on Feb. 6

IQUIQUE PROVINCE, Tarapacá — A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected close to La Tirana Friday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was reported that a tremor shook the region at 02:27 UTC (23:27 local time). The epicenter was located approximately 31 km south of La Tirana, at a depth of 35 km.

Tremors last week

Over the past week, the region has experienced two earthquakes, greater than magnitude 2.5. The larger, a 4.2 magnitude event, was reported close to Tocopilla one day ago. The second, with a magnitude of 3.8, was felt close to La Tirana on February 2.
