Weather alert for fog in Augusta Metropolitan Area until Tuesday morning

Published Oct 6, 2026

A report from the National Weather Service was issued on Tuesday at 4:08 a.m. for fog until 9 a.m. The alert is for Lincoln, McDuffie, Columbia, Richmond and Burke counties.

“Patchy to more widespread fog development will be possible through sunrise this morning. At times the fog could become dense, restricting visibilities to less than a half to a quarter of a mile in areas. The fog should lift after by 9 a.m. While driving this morning, be alert for rapid changes in visibilities over short distances. Be sure to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you,” states the NWS.

Fog safety: Tips from the NWS for safe travels

If you must venture out in foggy conditions, keep these safety tips from the NWS in mind:

Reduce speed:

• Slow down and allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely.

Visibility matters:

• Ensure your vehicle is visible to others by using low-beam headlights, which also activate your taillights. If available, employ your fog lights.

Avoid high-beams:

• Refrain from using high-beam lights, as they create glare, making it more difficult for you to see what’s ahead of you on the road.

Maintain safe gaps:

• Leave a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to account for sudden stops or changes in the traffic pattern.

Stay in your lane:

• To ensure you are staying in the correct lane, use the road’s lane markings as a guide.

Zero visibility protocol:

• In cases of near-zero visibility due to dense fog, activate your hazard lights and seek a safe spot, like a nearby business parking lot, to pull over and stop.

Limited parking options:

• If no parking area is available, pull your vehicle as far to the roadside as possible. Once stationary, turn off all lights except the hazard flashers, engage the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal to ensure your tail lights are not illuminated, reducing the risk of other drivers colliding with your stationary vehicle.

By adhering to these precautions from the NWS, you can navigate foggy conditions more safely, reducing the likelihood of accidents and ensuring your personal safety.
