Weather alert announced for gusty winds in Hockley and Lubbock counties Wednesday night

A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 10:20 p.m. for gusty winds until 10:45 p.m. for Hockley and Lubbock counties.

Residents should prepare for wind gusts of up to 55 mph.

“At 10:19 p.m., trained weather spotters reported gusty winds and 1/2 mile visibility due to blowing dust near Ropseville, or 10 miles southwest of Lubbock, moving north at 50 mph,” states the NWS. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.”

Locations impacted by the alert include Smyer, Ropesville, Levelland, Buffalo Springs, Ransom Canyon, Wolfforth, Texas Tech University, Slide, Downtown Lubbock, Woodrow and Reese Center.

The NWS states, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until midnight for northwestern Texas.”
