Update: Seismic activity on March 17 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake near Kuril Islands detected

A 5.0 magnitude quake rattled close to Kuril Islands around midday Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted the area at 03:24 UTC (13:24 local time). It occurred at a depth of 43 km with the epicenter of Kuril Islands. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Last week’s tremor

On Mar. 15, another magnitude 4.9 quake was registered nearby, also close to Kuril Islands.
