Update: Seismic activity on Jan. 9 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake near Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia reported

A 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded close to Severo-Kuril’sk Friday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck the area at 12:22 UTC (22:22 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter located about 171 km south of Severo-Kuril’sk. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.
