Update: Earthquake rocks region near Sand Point, AK on July 16 – 7.3 magnitude recorded

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK—Wednesday morning, a 7.3 magnitude quake was detected close to Sand Point, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor shook the area at 8:37 p.m. (9:37 a.m. local time). It occurred at a depth of 12 miles with the epicenter located about 54 miles south of Sand Point.

Those who noticed the quake are encouraged to report it via the USGS Felt Report form. 76 people have submitted responses through the agency’s online form, reporting they experienced the tremor. According to the USGS DYFI report, residents in a number of cities, including Chugiak, Eagle River, Girdwood and Anchorage, reported feeling strong shaking from the earthquake.
