Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude reported close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on June 11

A 5.0 magnitude quake hit near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 10:00 UTC (21:00 local time). The epicenter was roughly 167 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

During the past week, six tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher have been registered in the area. The largest, measuring 5.4, shook the same region on Jun. 11.
