A 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor rattled at 16:54 UTC (03:54 local time), with its epicenter situated about 139 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and a depth of 53 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

14 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher have been reported in the region during the past week, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake registered in the same area prior to this quake.
