Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 shakes area near South Sandwich Islands region on June 17

A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to South Sandwich Islands region on Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A tremor jolted the region at 19:48 UTC (17:48 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was of South Sandwich Islands region and occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.
