Update: Earthquake jolts region close to Vilyuchinsk, Russia on Jan. 26 – 5.0 magnitude recorded

A 5.0 magnitude quake was registered close to Vilyuchinsk Monday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor rattled at 04:43 UTC (15:43 local time), with its epicenter situated approximately 168 km southeast of Vilyuchinsk and a depth of 23 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Over the last week, there was one more tremor of magnitude 2.5 centered in the region, which was also detected near Vilyuchinsk, six days earlier.
