Update: Earthquake jolts region close to Abepura, Indonesia on Jan. 18 – 5.0 magnitude recorded

SARMI REGENCY, Papua — A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected close to Abepura Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which hit the area at 06:38 UTC (15:38 local time), was centered roughly 203 km west of Abepura. It occurred at a depth of 31 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 4.9 but later upgraded to 5.0.
