Update: 5.3 magnitude earthquake hits close to Sand Point, AK on July 17

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK—A 5.3 magnitude quake was registered close to Sand Point Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

At 2:09 a.m. (3:09 p.m. local time), the region was jolted by a tremor. The earthquake struck at a depth of 18 miles, with its epicenter about 57 miles south-southeast of Sand Point.
