Update: 5.1 magnitude earthquake recorded close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 30

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake struck near Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday morning.

It was reported that a tremor jolted the region at 20:51 UTC (06:51 local time). The epicenter was situated roughly 196 km south of Severo-Kuril’sk, at a depth of 10 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 4.9 but later upgraded to 5.1.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, nine tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater have been reported in the area, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The biggest, a 5.6 magnitude quake, was detected in the same region prior to this quake.
